MOV is packaging, not necessarily different video: a great deal of iPhone and Mac footage is already H.264 with AAC inside, and for those files this conversion just moves the contents to an MP4 container in seconds, losing nothing at all. Newer iPhones shoot HEVC instead, which genuinely re-encodes; where this browser cannot decode HEVC itself, a bundled decoder does it in software and the page says what to expect before you start. Questions

Why is my conversion finished almost instantly?

The MOV already held H.264 with AAC, so only the container changed. That path is lossless and takes about as long as copying the file.

Why does another MOV take much longer?

It holds HEVC, which must be decoded and re-encoded to H.264. On machines without hardware help a bundled decoder works in software, at real time or slower.

Is quality lost?

On the repackage path, none whatsoever. On the HEVC path, the H.264 encode is visually matched at a healthy bitrate.

Does the video upload anywhere?

No. Even multi-gigabyte files convert locally, streaming to disk as they go.
