RTF once did Markdown's job, moving formatted text between programs that shared nothing else, and old exports, notes and legal templates still carry it. Translation here maps the structures across: headings to heading levels, lists to lists, bold and italics preserved, tables carried where present. Old-format noise and font commands are left behind. Decades of accumulated RTF becomes text that modern editors, wikis and pipelines treat as native. Parsing runs in the browser.
Questions
Why are RTF files so much bigger than their text?
The format spells out formatting in verbose control words; Markdown implies it in punctuation. The 8× shrink is typical.
Do legal templates convert cleanly?
Text, structure and emphasis do; pagination and letterhead positioning are formatting, which stays behind.
Is parsing local?
Yes, entirely.
