Software releases favour xz for its ferocious compression, and desktops outside Linux favour ignorance of it. The conversion decompresses the xz layer, unpacks a tar found within, and rebuilds everything as an ordinary ZIP, folder tree intact. Expect the ZIP noticeably larger than the xz, that compression was the format's whole point, and expect every machine to open it, which the xz never offered. Handling is in-memory and local.
Questions
Why did the file grow substantially?
xz compresses harder than ZIP's deflate by design; unpacking to ZIP trades ratio for reach.
Is the inner tarball handled in one go?
Yes, both layers unpack and the contents rebuild directly into the ZIP.
Large releases?
Unpacked in memory with a warning past roughly half a gigabyte.
