Bring a 2003 AVI into the present
Old codecs decoded in software by a bundled decoder, re-encoded to H.264 that plays on today's everything.

AVIs from old cameras and drives carry codecs modern software abandoned: DivX, Xvid, ancient MJPEG. The browser alone cannot read them, so a bundled decoder unpacks every frame in software and hands it to the normal H.264 encoder. That is the slow path, roughly real time or longer, and the page says so before you start rather than after. The reward is family footage and archives that play on current phones, TVs and editors without a codec-pack safari.
Questions
Why is this slower than my other conversions?
Nothing in the machine accelerates these old codecs, so every frame is decoded in software before re-encoding. The page estimates the time before starting.
Will very obscure codecs work?
The common DivX-era family does. A codec the bundled decoder does not cover fails with a clear sentence naming the problem, not a shrug.
Is the original file changed?
No, it is only read. Keep it until you have checked the MP4.
