Convert GIF to PNG
A clean lossless still from a GIF: the first frame of an animation, or the whole image of a static one.

- Animated GIFFirst frame as the still

- DecisionsNone; lossless to lossless
GIFs still linger as static images in old clip art, downloaded diagrams and legacy exports, and PNG is their natural successor: lossless, transparent where the GIF was, free of the 256-colour ceiling for any future edits. Dropping an animated GIF here gives the first frame as the still. Either way the result is a modern file every tool prefers, produced locally with no quality decisions to make, since both formats are lossless for what they hold.
Questions
Which frame do I get from an animation?
The first. For a different moment, pause the GIF in a player and screenshot, or convert to MP4 and step through frames there.
Is PNG always better than static GIF?
Effectively yes: same losslessness, real colour depth, better compression, wider tool support. GIF's only modern excuse is animation.
Uploaded anywhere?
No, converted in your browser.
