Modernise a GIF into an animated WebP
Same loop, full colour range, a fraction of the bytes, for destinations that live in browsers.
Runs in your browser. Your file never leaves your computer.
- AnimationFrames and timing preserved
- SizeTypically a third or less
- ColoursFull range, no 256 cap
- Plays inAll current browsers
For web use, animated WebP does everything GIF does while fixing its two sins: files shrink dramatically and the 256-colour ceiling lifts. Every current browser plays it. This conversion carries frames and timing across; static GIFs simply become efficient still WebPs. The one audience to consider is non-browser software, chat pickers and office tools that still expect GIFs; where that matters, the GIF to MP4 route often serves better. Processing is local either way.
Questions
Where might a WebP animation not play?
Outside browsers: older messaging apps, office software and some picker integrations remain GIF-only. Check the destination once.
Does the loop behave the same?
Yes, loop count and per-frame timing carry over from the GIF.
Is quality actually better?
The source frames cannot improve, but they stop being forced through GIF's palette, and future edits start from a modern format.
