Reports, papers and manuals locked in PDF want out as text that tooling can use, and Markdown is that text. Extraction reads the PDF's text layer and recovers structure where the layout permits: headings by their prominence, lists by their markers, paragraphs in reading order, tables where well-formed. Multi-column academic layouts come out as best effort, worth knowing upfront. Scanned documents without a text layer are named as such instead of producing blanks. Local, as always.

Extraction keeps what the document says; the page furniture stays in the PDF.

Questions

How good is heading recovery?

Good on documents with clear visual hierarchy; flat or eccentric typography yields flatter Markdown. The words always arrive.

Are page numbers and running headers cleaned out?

Yes where identifiable, so the text reads continuously rather than being interrupted every page.

Scanned PDFs?

Called out as having no text layer, with page images offered instead.
