Extract a ZIP file in your browser

Unpack a ZIP straight into a folder you choose, password or not, without installing anything and without the archive going anywhere.

Runs in your browser. Your file never leaves your computer.

Every computer can open a ZIP, but not every situation lets you: a locked-down work laptop, a Chromebook, a phone, or a ZIP that turns out to need a password and a tool you do not have. This page unpacks a ZIP inside your browser and writes the files straight into a folder you choose, with the archive's own folder structure kept. It streams entry by entry, so a multi-gigabyte archive does not have to fit in memory. Password-protected ZIPs work too, whichever tool made them: the page asks for the password and it stays on your machine.

Questions

Do I need to upload the ZIP?

No. The archive is read by your browser and the files are written to your disk directly. Nothing inside it, not even a file name, is sent anywhere.

Does it work with a password-protected ZIP?

Yes. The page notices the archive is protected and asks for the password before extracting. Both the older ZIP encryption and AES-protected archives from 7-Zip or WinZip are supported. The password is used in your browser and never transmitted.

Where do the files go?

On Chrome and Edge the browser shows a folder picker and the files are written straight into the folder you choose, with the archive's subfolders recreated. On browsers without a folder picker, each file downloads on its own.

What about RAR and 7z?

Those have their own pages, linked below. They are unpacked in memory rather than streamed, so very large archives are the one limit, and password-protected RAR and 7z are not supported yet.

Can I turn the ZIP into something else instead?

Yes: the same drop box offers a ZIP with a password, or a tar.gz for Linux and macOS tools, without extracting first.

RAR and 7z archives extract the same way. A ZIP that needs to travel safely can be re-packed with a password.
