Animated WebPs play beautifully in browsers and then fail exactly where animations are most wanted: old forums, chat integrations, e-mail signatures, tools whose animation support begins and ends with GIF. This conversion rebuilds the animation frame by frame with timing preserved. GIF's 256-colour ceiling means gradients may band compared to the WebP, the price of a thirty-year-old format, and the size usually grows. Compatibility, not quality, is the purchase here.
Questions
Why does my GIF look grainier than the WebP?
GIF allows 256 colours per frame, so smooth gradients dither. Simple graphics survive perfectly; photographic animations show it most.
A static WebP gives no GIF option. Why?
For still images GIF is strictly worse than PNG or WebP, so the page offers those instead. GIF earns its place only by animating.
Is the animation processed locally?
Yes, decoded and rebuilt in your browser.
