AVIF too new for your tools? Use WebP
Nearly the compression, far broader acceptance: the middle ground when AVIF is a step too far.
Runs in your browser. Your file never leaves your computer.
- TradeSlightly bigger, far more accepted
- OutputWebP at quality 82
- AlphaPreserved through the conversion
- SpeedQuick; WebP encodes fast
Plenty of software sits in the middle: comfortable with WebP, blank on AVIF. Converting bridges exactly that gap, keeping files compact while widening where they open, CMS uploaders, chat apps, image tools a generation behind. As with any lossy re-encode a little fidelity is spent; at quality 82 output it stays out of sight. When the destination is old enough to refuse WebP too, the JPG and PNG routes stand ready behind this one.
Questions
Why not convert straight to JPG?
If the destination handles WebP, you keep smaller files and transparency. JPG is the deeper fallback for genuinely old software.
What does the conversion cost?
A minor second lossy generation and a small size increase over the AVIF. Both are the price of compatibility.
Is transparency kept?
Yes, WebP carries alpha just as AVIF does.
