- OutputQuality 85 JPG
- AlphaFlattened to white
- SpeedDecodes in a blink
Saving an image from a modern site increasingly yields an AVIF, and forwarding it to a colleague, an uploader or an older application yields confusion. JPG resolves it universally. The decode-and-re-encode happens locally at quality 85; visible fidelity carries over, though AVIF's transparency, if present, becomes white in the JPG. For editing rather than sharing, the PNG route preserves more; for making a file everyone opens, this is the one.
Questions
Why did the file get bigger?
AVIF compresses harder than JPG can. Converting back to the older format spends more bytes to say the same picture.
Do I lose quality converting?
A small second-generation loss occurs, invisible at quality 85 for normal viewing. Pixel-critical work should go through PNG instead.
Is this processed on a server?
No, in your browser. The image stays with you.
