Since 2017 iPhones have saved photos as HEIC, which is about half the size of a JPG at the same quality and which a surprising amount of the world still cannot open: Windows without an add-on, older Android phones, many web upload forms, some email clients, and most software older than a few years. The fix is a JPG. This page makes one from each HEIC at full resolution and quality 85, a setting that looks identical on screen and in print, and it does it in your browser, so the photo of your child or your passport is never sent to a server. Location and camera data are removed on the way.

A JPG is 8-bit and carries no motion; on a screen or a print neither is visible.

Questions

Why can't I open a HEIC file on Windows?

Windows ships without the HEIC decoder unless the free extension from the Microsoft Store is installed, and many programs ignore it even then. A JPG opens in every version of Windows and every program that shows pictures.

Does HEIC to JPG lose quality?

HEIC is already compressed, and JPG compresses it again, so a little is lost. At quality 85 the difference is not visible at any normal viewing size. The file is usually around twice the size of the HEIC because JPG is a less efficient format, not because anything was added.

Is the photo uploaded?

No. The HEIC is decoded and re-encoded inside your browser and the JPG is saved straight to your disk. That is the point of doing it here: photos of people, documents and homes never leave your computer.

What happens to the location and camera information?

It is removed. The JPG has no GPS coordinates, no camera model and no shooting data, so it can be sent or posted without leaking where it was taken. Orientation is baked in, so the picture is upright everywhere.

Can I convert many HEIC photos at once?

Drop several files and a Convert all button appears; on Pro they run as a batch into one folder. On the free tiers they queue one at a time.

For a web page, WebP is smaller than JPG at the same look. For a form that wants a document, PDF puts the photo on a page.
