PNG is a poor home for photographs: a screenshot of a photo, a camera export, a scanned picture saved as PNG can weigh ten times what it needs to. JPG exists for exactly this content and cuts it down at no visible cost at quality 85. The one thing to check first is transparency, which JPG cannot hold and will fill with white. Flat-colour graphics are better left as PNG, where they are both smaller and sharper.
Questions
When should a PNG stay a PNG?
When it is a graphic with flat colours, text or hard edges, or when it needs transparency. JPG blurs edges and fills transparent areas.
How much quality does quality 85 keep?
For photographs, visually all of it. Artifacts appear under heavy zoom, not at viewing size.
Is the image uploaded to convert?
No, the work is done by your browser on your machine.
