Squeeze PNGs to the smallest files browsers open
AVIF pushes past WebP for photographic content, at the cost of slower encoding and older-software support.

AVIF is the current frontier of image compression: photographic content drops below even WebP, often dramatically below PNG, while modern browsers render it natively. That makes it the pick for image-heavy sites where transfer size decides load time. Two honest caveats: encoding is noticeably slower than other formats, and software older than a few years may not open the files. For web delivery both usually cost nothing; the conversion runs locally either way.
Questions
AVIF or WebP for a website?
AVIF compresses harder, WebP encodes faster and enjoys slightly wider legacy support. Many sites serve AVIF first with WebP as fallback, which browsers negotiate automatically.
Why is encoding slow?
AVIF derives from a video codec and spends real computation finding its savings. Large images can take a minute; the result is why.
Does transparency survive?
Yes, AVIF supports alpha fully. Graphics with sharp text can show softness at low quality settings, so inspect those before shipping.
