Browsers, Windows shortcuts and pinned sites each reach for different icon sizes, and the ICO format's job is holding them all in one file. From a single square-ish PNG, this page renders 16, 32, 48 and 256 pixel versions and packs them properly. Starting from a reasonably large source, 256 pixels or more, keeps the small renders crisp. Transparency survives at every size, and the file drops into a site root as favicon.ico, done.
Questions
Why not just link a PNG as the favicon?
Modern browsers accept that, but Windows shortcuts, old browsers and some contexts still want a real ICO. One proper file covers everything.
My source PNG is rectangular. Problem?
It will be fitted, but favicons live in square boxes; cropping to square first gives a cleaner result.
Are the small sizes hand-tuned?
They are scaled with care, which suits most marks. Pixel-perfect 16-pixel art is a designer's job no converter replaces.
